The Art of Advanced Photo Editing: Why It's Included With Every Session
When you hire a photographer, you're investing in much more than the time spent behind the camera. The magic doesn't end when the shutter clicks—in many ways, it's just beginning. One of the things that sets my photography experience apart is the level of professional editing and attention to detail that goes into every image I deliver. My goal is simple: to create photographs that are not only beautiful today, but truly wall-worthy for years to come. And while this is something many photographers charge a per image fee for - it's included in all my portraits sessions for families of all sizes.
Creating Clean, Timeless Images
In Charleston and at our beaches no matter how carefully we plan a session time and location, there are often small distractions that find their way into the background of a photograph. Whether it's strangers walking through the frame on Rainbow Row or at the beach, a road sign attached to the charming street lamp, a parked vehicle, or another distracting element, these things can pull attention away from what matters most—you and your family.
Whenever possible, I carefully remove distractions during the editing process to create a cleaner, more polished final image. My goal is for your eyes to go directly to the people in the photograph, not the clutter around them.
Taking Care of Life's Little Bumps and Scrapes
If you've ever tried to get children ready for a photo session, you know that bumps, bruises, scratches, and bug bites seem to appear at exactly the wrong time—especially during the summer months! From playground adventures and bike rides to mosquito bites and scraped knees, these little marks are simply part of being a kid.
As part of my editing process, I routinely remove temporary blemishes such as scratches, bruises, bug bites, and minor skin irritations that may distract from the portrait. My goal is to preserve your and your child's natural appearance while eliminating those short-term imperfections that won't be there a few weeks from now. After all, when you look back on these photographs years from now, I want you to remember their smile, personality, and joy—not the mosquito bite they got the day before the session.
The Secret Behind the Perfect Group Photo
One of the most common comments photographers hear during a group session is, "Did everyone really smile at the same time?"
Usually, the answer is no!
This is where a technique called "head swapping" comes into play. During group sessions, I take multiple images from the exact same position. This allows me to combine the best expressions from several photographs into one final image.
If someone blinked, a child looked away, or one family member wasn't smiling in a particular frame, I can often replace that expression with a better one from another image taken just seconds before or after. The result is a polished group portrait where everyone looks their best.
Because let's be honest—getting every person, especially young children, looking perfectly at the camera at the exact same moment is nearly impossible!
Portrait Retouching That Still Looks Natural
For senior portraits, maternity sessions, and other individual portrait sessions, I include professional retouching designed to enhance your natural beauty while still keeping you looking like yourself.
This may include:
-
Brightening and enhancing the eyes for a natural sparkle
-
Taming flyaways and frizzy hair
-
Softening under-eye shadows and minimizing temporary signs of fatigue
-
Reducing the appearance of wrinkles while maintaining natural skin texture
-
Subtle, natural-looking teeth whitening
-
Cleaning up minor distractions that draw attention away from the subject
The goal is never to create an unrealistic version of you. Instead, I want to highlight the features that make you uniquely beautiful while preserving authenticity.
Special Care for Maternity Portraits
Maternity photography is about celebrating one of life's most incredible seasons. During maternity sessions, I include additional retouching designed to help moms-to-be feel confident and radiant.
This may involve subtle shaping and refinement of clothing lines and body contours, such as smoothing areas that can appear temporarily emphasized by posing, fabric bunching, or camera angles. Small adjustments may be made to areas like the back, arms, hips, or under the chin to create a more flattering and polished final portrait.
These enhancements are always done with a light touch. The goal is not to change your body, but to ensure the focus remains on your beautiful pregnancy and to help you feel your absolute best when you see your images.
Magazine-Worthy, Yet Authentically You
My editing philosophy is simple: I want you to look like the very best version of yourself.
I don't believe in over-editing or changing people beyond recognition. Instead, I use professional retouching techniques to enhance your natural beauty, remove distractions, and create images that feel polished, timeless, and worthy of being displayed proudly in your home.
When you receive your final gallery, you're getting more than photographs. You're receiving carefully crafted portraits that have been thoughtfully edited with the same care and attention that went into capturing them.
Because every image deserves to tell your story at its very best.
