What to Wear Guide for Your Senior Portraits on Rainbow Row in Charleston
Rainbow Row's iconic pastel homes, charming sidewalks, and timeless Southern architecture create the perfect backdrop for elegant, colorful and fun senior portraits. The key is choosing outfits that complement—not compete with—the scenery. Soft colors, feminine details, and thoughtful accessories photograph beautifully in this historic setting. I'm going to break down EXACTLY what I recommend and love in this area because it photographs beautifully!
A Color Palette That Pops
For Rainbow Row, I recommend building your wardrobe around:
-
One white outfit for a classic, timeless look.
-
One floral outfit to add softness and personality.
-
One pastel or signature color that complements YOU.
Think shades like:
-
Blush pink
-
Soft blue
-
Sage green
-
Lavender
-
Butter yellow
-
Something BOLD: Black, Cobalt, or Red
Pastel colors photograph beautifully against Charleston's pastel architecture while keeping the focus on you, but if you can really rock a bold color choice I will ALWAYS be able to find a nook that pairs perfectly.
Look One: Timeless White
A white dress is always my favorite recommendation for Rainbow Row.
Whether you choose lace, eyelet, pleats, or a simple classic silhouette, white photographs beautifully against the pastel homes and reflects light in the most flattering way. It's also the perfect thing to pair a cap and gown with for a complete grad-ready look.
Midi-length dresses are especially elegant and create movement while walking through Charleston's historic streets.
Look Two: Soft Florals
Florals are made for Rainbow Row!
Whether you go with a bold floral pattern or a soft hint, I can pair your dress beautifully with the amazing variety we have in landscape in the area. I want you to choose a dress you're excited about.
Flowy dresses create beautiful movement and add a romantic, effortless feel to your portraits.
Look Three: Pretty in ???
Your color outfit is your chance to have fun while still keeping everything elegant. Choose a color that really showcases your eyes, your hair or skin tone. Something that you feel confident in and are excited by.
Look Four: Pants or Shorts
Adding an option of jeans, pants, shorts or a jumper allows us to do more variety in your posing that might not be possible with a dress. So if you're a casual girlie, this is a great time to show your personality! Add in a college t-shirt, pennant, childhood stuffed animal - it's your time to shine!
Choose Flattering Styles
Always select outfits that:
-
Complement your skin tone and hair color
-
Fit your personality
-
Make you feel confident
-
Flatter your figure
-
Allow you to move comfortably
Confidence always photographs best, so make sure you try on and see how it looks before you bring it to your session.
Shopping Tips
You don't have to purchase an entirely new wardrobe for your session but going shopping to see what you like and what fit style works for your body is definitely important before shopping online.
Some of my favorite options include:
-
Renting designer pieces
-
Shopping local boutiques
-
Consignment stores
-
Borrowing from friends or family
This is a great way to wear elevated, high-quality pieces without the full retail price.
Senior Trends: Childhood Stuffy
One of the most fantastic trends I've seen for my class of 2027 is including your childhood stuffed animal in your session. Even if just for one image, I promise this is going to be an image your parents and you will cherish. So many seniors have a collection of images with their childhood stuffed animal and I think this is the perfect way to honor your best stuffy for all the years it's been by your side.
I hope this guide has been a helpful resource when planning for your senior session, and know that I am always here as your photographer to help you put together those final touches as your session approaches. I can't wait to capture this special milestone in your life and showcase YOU!
