Sunset Maternity Session on Seabrook Island

Sunset Beach Maternity Session on Seabrook Island, SC | Charleston Maternity Photographer

There is something truly magical about a sunset maternity session on Seabrook Island. The soft ocean breeze, endless stretch of pristine shoreline, and warm golden light create the perfect backdrop for celebrating one of life's sweetest seasons. Emily and David's maternity session was a beautiful reminder that simple moments together often become the most meaningful photographs.

We met at Boardwalk 4 on Seabrook Island, where the beach was quiet and the evening light couldn't have been more perfect. To start the session, Emily and David wore the outfits they arrived in so we could capture a few relaxed portraits together during the first moments of golden hour. I always love beginning this way because it gives couples a chance to settle into the session before changing into one of the gowns from my Client Closet.

For her first look, Emily selected my White Athena Gown, one of my favorite maternity dresses because of its versatility. The gown can be worn with the skirt flowing naturally for a soft, romantic look or pulled down into a flattering mermaid silhouette. Like many expecting moms, Emily admitted she was a little nervous about wearing a fitted dress. Pregnancy is beautiful, but it's also completely normal to feel self-conscious about stepping in front of the camera.

One of the biggest parts of my job as a Charleston maternity photographer is making sure every mom feels confident and beautiful. From carefully chosen poses that naturally create flattering curves to subtle professional retouching afterward, my goal is always to highlight the beauty of pregnancy while helping my clients feel like the very best version of themselves. Emily absolutely glowed in the White Athena Gown, and the way the golden sunlight reflected off the fabric created a timeless, airy look that perfectly matched the evening.

To make outfit changes quick and stress-free, Emily wore a fitted white bra and maternity shapewear beneath both dresses. This allowed her to change comfortably inside my pop-up changing tent in just a few minutes. David also brought a second shirt, giving us another subtle variation in their final gallery without taking away from our time together on the beach.

As the sun disappeared below the horizon, we entered one of my favorite times to photograph: blue hour. The sky transformed into soft shades of blue and lavender, creating a completely different mood from the warm golden light just minutes before. For this portion of the session, Emily changed into the Kristina Maxi in Dusty Blue from my Client Closet. The color complemented the cool evening tones beautifully, and the flowing fabric caught every gust of wind, adding movement and elegance to each photograph.

As we wrapped up the session, I decided to experiment with a technique called shutter drag, which uses a slower shutter speed to capture intentional movement. I originally tried it just for fun, but the final images quickly became some of my favorites from the evening. The combination of flowing fabric, gentle ocean waves, and soft evening light created an artistic finish that perfectly captured the feeling of the moment.

In just one hour, we documented this exciting chapter of Emily and David's lives with a gallery full of timeless, elegant images they'll be able to look back on for years to come. Sessions like these are exactly why I love photographing maternity on the South Carolina coast. Between the changing light, the peaceful beaches, and the anticipation of welcoming a new baby, every session tells a unique story.
