What to Wear for Your Charleston, SC Family Portrait Session
One of the questions I hear most often from families is, "What should we wear?" The good news is that choosing outfits doesn't have to be stressful. With a little planning, your clothing can beautifully complement Charleston's historic charm while helping your family look timeless in photographs you'll cherish for generations.
If you're planning your family portraits in Rainbow Row or the French Quarter, your wardrobe should enhance—not compete with—the colorful streets, cobblestone roads, wrought iron gates, and overflowing seasonal flower boxes that make these locations so iconic.
Tip 1: Start with Mom
My biggest piece of advice? Mom should choose her outfit first.
As moms, we're often focused on everyone else, but your confidence sets the tone for the entire session. Choose a dress or outfit that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself. Whether that's a flowing floral dress, a subtle pattern, or a solid color with beautiful texture, your outfit becomes the inspiration for everyone else's.
Once you've found the perfect dress, it's much easier to coordinate the rest of the family.
Tip 2: Build Your Color Palette Around Mom
Rather than trying to perfectly match everyone, think about coordinating.
Choose one or two colors from Mom's dress and pair them with neutral tones like:
-
Cream
-
Ivory
-
Beige
-
Soft tan
-
Light gray
-
Navy
-
Muted sage
These colors photograph beautifully against Charleston's colorful homes and historic architecture without overwhelming the scene.
Rainbow Row is already full of vibrant pastel homes, while the French Quarter offers textured brick, historic doorways, ironwork, and cobblestone streets. A coordinated palette allows your family to stand out while still feeling naturally connected to the environment.
Tip 3: Texture Makes a Big Difference
One of the easiest ways to elevate your family portraits is by choosing clothing with texture.
Instead of thin cotton T-shirts, consider fabrics like:
-
Cotton knits
-
Eyelet lace
-
Embroidery
-
Tweed
-
Linen blends
-
Chunky knits
-
Velvet (during cooler months)
-
Structured cotton dresses
Texture creates depth in photographs and gives your images a more polished, timeless look.
Tip 4: Pay Attention to the Details
The little details truly make a difference.
For dads and boys, I always recommend:
-
Tucking shirts in whenever possible
-
Wearing a belt for a finished look
-
Choosing well-fitted clothing instead of oversized pieces
And don't forget your shoes!
Because I photograph both full-length portraits and close-up family moments, your shoes will absolutely be visible. Choose footwear that complements your outfit rather than athletic sneakers or shoes with bright logos whenever possible.
Charleston Summers Can Be Hot
If your session is during the summer, keep Charleston's weather in mind.
Our heat index often climbs well over 100 degrees, and humidity can affect certain fabrics more than others. Lightweight materials like silk and linen are beautiful, but they wrinkle very easily.
If you're planning to wear delicate fabrics, I recommend arriving in comfortable clothing and changing once you arrive at your session location. I'll have a portable pop-up changing tent available so you can step into your portrait outfit just before we begin, helping your clothing stay fresh and wrinkle-free.
We'll also move efficiently throughout your session to keep everyone comfortable while creating a beautiful variety of images.
Dressing for Fall Portraits in Charleston
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family portraits in Charleston. As the weather begins to cool, richer color palettes photograph beautifully against the city's historic architecture and changing seasonal landscapes. Jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, burgundy, plum, mustard, and deep rust create a timeless, elevated look while adding warmth and depth to your images. One of the advantages of working with an experienced Charleston photographer is that I intentionally choose our locations based on what you're wearing. If your family is dressed in rich jewel tones, I'll guide you to backdrops that complement your outfits rather than compete with them. Whether we're photographing among the soft pastels of Rainbow Row, the textured brick streets of the French Quarter, or beneath moss-draped oaks, I'll select backgrounds that allow your family to be the focal point while creating images that feel cohesive, natural, and beautifully balanced.
The Goal Is a Gallery You'll Love for Years
My goal isn't just to create one great family photo.
During your session, we'll capture a variety of family groupings, candid moments, individual portraits, sibling photos, and full family images that work beautifully together. Whether you're designing a gallery wall or filling heirloom albums, you'll have a collection that tells your family's story in one of the most beautiful cities in the South.
When your outfits are thoughtfully coordinated, you can spend less time worrying about what you're wearing and more time enjoying the experience together. The result is a timeless gallery that feels effortless, elegant, and uniquely your family.
I can't wait to help you create beautiful memories in the heart of Charleston.
