Ava’s Charleston Senior Session - Two Days, Five Iconic Locations & the Perfect Outfit Plan

There’s something so special and exciting about traveling to Charleston for your senior portraits and Ava’s session is the perfect example of how to make the most of your time here. From pastel streets to historic architecture and glowing golden light, we designed a two-day experience that gave her a full, diverse gallery while keeping everything intentional and stress-free.

Ava booked my Compendium Package, which is ideal for seniors who want variety, flexibility, and a truly elevated experience. With two session dates, multiple locations, and up to six outfits, this package allows us to slow down, plan strategically, and create a gallery that feels like you in every setting. It also includes a custom designed leather album so you can relive that experience for decades to come.

Day One: Golden Hour on Rainbow Row + Sunset at the Pineapple Fountain

We kicked off Ava’s session on Friday evening, starting along East Bay Street and the iconic Rainbow Row. These locations are known for their soft pastel homes, making them one of the most popular spots for senior portraits in Charleston—and for good reason.

To complement the colorful backdrop, we chose to focus on the (rented) pink floral mermaid-style dress, which photographed beautifully against the historic homes. Because this area already offers so much variety in color and texture, we intentionally kept her in one outfit to maintain a cohesive look throughout this portion of the session.

Stop 2: Waterfront and Pineapple Fountain

We wrapped the evening at the Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park. This is a high-traffic location, but it faces east—meaning only sunrise and sunset are the best lighting scenario here. For the sake of the overall plan and what we needed to accomplish Saturday we decided to take on this location on Friday night which was difficult, but we managed. Timing is everything in Charleston, and planning around light (and crowds!) is a huge part of creating those dreamy final images. While I wouldn't recommend this spot on a Friday night during the busy tourist season ever again it was necessary to accomplish so that we could focus on a different location the next day.

Day Two: Sunrise in the French Quarter + A Full Outfit Experience

Saturday morning started bright and early in the French Quarter—another must for Charleston seniors who love timeless architecture.

Stop 1: City Hall on Broad Street (Family Portraits First)

We began at City Hall, where Ava wore two different blue dresses that paired perfectly with the white marble staircase. This location is elegant, clean, and classic—making it ideal for both individual portraits and family photos.

Starting with family portraits was especially important for Ava and her mom, Julie. By scheduling these first, we ensured that hair and makeup were fresh and photo-ready for everyone involved. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, and when including family in your senior session we want to make sure everyone else can look their best, too.

A Budget-Friendly Tip for Senior Outfits

Ava made a smart (and stylish!) choice by mixing:

  • Rented pieces from Nuuly  (This blue gown, pink floral and the yellow Diana dress)
  • Borrowed items from friends (Lily Pulitzer)

This is one of my favorite tips for seniors—you don’t have to buy everything new to look amazing. Renting or borrowing allows you to wear high-end, unique pieces without the long-term investment, and it gives you more variety in your final gallery.

Stop 2: Washington Square + Chalmers Street

Next, Ava changed into a fun and preppy look: white pants paired with a Lilly Pulitzer top (borrowed from a friend!). This outfit felt playful and bright—perfect for the greenery of Washington Square and the historic cobblestone charm of Chalmers Street.

These two spots flow naturally together, which helps keep the session moving smoothly while still giving a totally different look and feel from earlier images.

Stop 3: Church Street + The Dock Street Theater

For her final look, Ava wore the Diana Mini Dress in yellow, which was absolutely made for this part of the session.

Since we were still on Chalmers we used the corner of Church and Chalmers to start with this outfit and moved down towards Queen Street to utilize the teal colors of the Dock Street Theater. The Jasmine is *almost* blooming but had yellow buds making it the perfect match for this dress.

Stop 4: The Mills House Hotel

The Mills House Hotel is one of the most iconic pink buildings in Charleston, and pairing it with a soft yellow dress created the perfect warm, cheerful color palette to end her session. This location was at the top of Ava's dream board so it felt like the perfect finale to her session.

How We Planned Ava’s Outfits for Each Location

One of the most important parts of a successful senior session in Charleston is intentional outfit planning.

Ava had a clear vision and a must-have location list, so we carefully mapped out:

  • Which outfits matched each backdrop
  • How to avoid clashing colors
  • The most efficient route for outfit changes

The result? A natural flow of the session and a gallery that feels cohesive but never repetitive.

Planning Your Charleston Senior Session

For Ava's session and all she really wanted to include The Compendium package was the right choice, and by splitting her session into two days it gave us:

  • The best lighting (sunset and sunrise)
  • More location variety without rushing
  • Time for multiple outfit changes
  • A relaxed, enjoyable experience

If you’re traveling to Charleston for your senior portraits, this approach makes such a difference in both the experience and the final images.

If Ava’s session inspired you, I’d love to help you create something just as personalized. Whether you’re dreaming of Rainbow Row, historic streets, or soft waterfront light, we’ll design a session that reflects your style from start to finish.

The key to a successful Charleston senior session? Planning ahead, choosing the right package, and being intentional with every detail.
