Kiawah Island Extended Family Session

There’s something truly special about photographing extended families on Kiawah Island. With its private golf resort setting, stunning natural landscapes, and access to everything from forests to wide-open beaches, it’s one of the most versatile and client-friendly locations for family photography in the Lowcountry.
This recent extended family session was the perfect example of why choosing to have your family portraits on Kiawah Island during your vacation photos can make the perfect setting, especially when flexibility matters most.
One of the biggest advantages of planning a session on Kiawah Island is the variety of backdrops available within minutes. Clients staying in this exclusive resort community have access to: scenic golf course views, shaded residential areas, picturesque golf cart paths, and uncrowded beaches.
When weather conditions are unpredictable—think high winds, heavy clouds, or sudden rain—having multiple nearby locations allows us to pivot quickly without sacrificing the quality or variety of your gallery.
Starting Close to Home: A Thoughtful Approach
For this particular session, accessibility was an important consideration. The family’s grandmother, who lives with Parkinson’s disease, had limited mobility. Because of that, we began the session right in the driveway of their rental home.
And honestly? It couldn’t have worked out better!
The soft, backlit glow created a warm and flattering setting where we captured all the essential groupings—grandparents with grandchildren, individual family units, and full extended family portraits. Starting here ensured that everyone, especially grandma and grandpa, could comfortably be included in every important moment.
Transitioning to Scenic Paths
Once we had those key images, we captured one more family group shot on a nearby golf cart path, taking advantage of Kiawah’s lush greenery and natural framing. These in-between locations often end up being client favorites—they’re relaxed, candid, and full of personality.
Heading to the Beach for Sunset
From there, we made our way to the beach just in time for sunset.
If you’ve ever been to the South Carolina coast, you know the weather can shift quickly. This evening brought steady winds with gusts up to 30 mph—definitely not ideal for an entire session on the shoreline.
But because we had already captured the majority of the session in more sheltered areas, the beach became the perfect finale rather than the main event.
The result? Dramatic skies, windswept hair, and glowing sunset tones that added movement and emotion to the final images—without the stress of trying to manage a full extended family in challenging conditions.
Extended family sessions require more than just a beautiful location—they require thoughtful planning, adaptability, and experience. By choosing a versatile destination like Kiawah Island and working with a photographer who can pivot when needed, this family received a gallery that felt both complete and effortless.
From accessible portraits at the home to playful candids along the path and stunning sunset beach images, every part of the session was designed with intention.
If you’re considering booking an extended family session on Kiawah Island, here are a few tips:
- Be open to the idea of a backdrop with some greenery, sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate and we need to pivot
- Prioritize accessibility for all family members
- Dress from head to toe in case we do need to switch from the beach to someplace else
- Trust your photographer to guide timing and location choices
Most importantly, stay flexible. Some of the most beautiful and meaningful images come from moments you didn’t originally plan- So let me handle the planning and give me your trust to capture these special memories!
