Gabriella's Senior Session at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens and Rainbow Row
When Gabriella and her mom traveled from Ohio for her senior portraits, she had one vision in mind: something fun, whimsical, and uniquely Charleston. Together, we planned a session that combined two of the city's most iconic locations—Magnolia Plantation & Gardens and Rainbow Row—to create a gallery full of variety, movement, color, and timeless Southern charm.
Morning at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens
We began the day right when Magnolia Plantation & Gardens opened at 9:00 a.m. Starting early is one of my favorite tips for summer senior sessions in Charleston. Not only are the gardens much quieter, but the cooler morning temperatures make the experience far more enjoyable.
For our first location, Gabriella wore a beautiful off-white floral dress with a corset-style bodice and thigh slit. The romantic design paired perfectly with Magnolia's lush gardens and historic scenery. We spent most of our time around the iconic white bridge, the charming gazebo, and the main house, taking advantage of every picturesque backdrop the property has to offer.
Afterward, Gabriella changed into a vibrant hot pink tulle dress that completely transformed the look of the session. The bold color stood out beautifully beneath the towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, creating some of my favorite images from the morning. The contrast between the whimsical dress and the natural beauty of the tree-lined avenue was simply stunning.
Magnolia Plantation & Gardens is one of my favorite locations for seniors who love romantic gardens, rich Charleston history, majestic live oaks, and seasonal blooms. If you're considering this location for your own senior portraits, it's important to know that Magnolia charges a $250 photography permit fee for portrait sessions on the property.
An Evening Among the Colors of Rainbow Row
Later that evening, we met downtown for the second half of Gabriella's session at Rainbow Row.
During Charleston's hottest months, I always plan outfit changes strategically. Anyone who has tried pulling on a pair of jeans after spending time outside in Charleston's humidity knows exactly why! We started with Gabriella's jeans and black silk top while temperatures were still warm, making the rest of the outfit changes much more comfortable.
Our first stop was Longitude Lane, tucked just off Rainbow Row. This charming alleyway, with its cobblestone path, ivy-covered walls, and historic brick, created the perfect backdrop for a more editorial, sophisticated look. We continued photographing in this outfit as we moved over to the colorful pink and yellow homes along the south side of Tradd Street, where the vibrant architecture added so much personality to her gallery.
Next, Gabriella changed into a flowing yellow maxi dress that she had purchased as soon as they arrived in Charleston. It couldn't have been a more perfect choice. Yellow complements so many of the pastel homes around Rainbow Row, and the movement of a long maxi dress always photographs beautifully. Dresses with lots of flow are some of my favorite wardrobe recommendations for senior sessions because they create elegant, dynamic images with every step and twirl.

The useable landscape in Charleston for my sessions is constantly changing. It is dependent on who is parked where, what gates are open or closed, where there might be construction... etc. But a true artist can find beautiful light and an eye catching moment in between all the chaos.
I'd like to think that is what makes hiring me worth every penny!
For her final look, Gabriella wore a classic white dress paired with black heels and her letterman jacket. While cheerleaders may not wear their jackets as often as other athletes, I always love incorporating them into senior sessions. These portraits become meaningful keepsakes that celebrate years of hard work, school memories, and accomplishments. I know these will be images both Gabriella and her mom will treasure for years to come.
We wrapped up the evening on Elliott Street, finishing the session with a timeless Charleston backdrop that perfectly completed her gallery.
A Perfect Combination for Charleston Senior Portraits
Combining Magnolia Plantation & Gardens with Rainbow Row in The Compendium Package creates an incredible amount of variety in a single senior session. From romantic gardens and centuries-old live oaks to colorful historic homes and charming downtown streets, these two locations complement each other beautifully and allow seniors to showcase multiple styles throughout their gallery.
Gabriella's session was the perfect example of how thoughtful outfit choices, strategic timing, and carefully selected locations can create a senior portrait experience that feels personal, fun, and unforgettable.
If you're planning your senior portraits and dream of a gallery filled with Charleston's iconic beauty, I'd love to help you create a session that's uniquely you!
