A Charleston Senior Session at Chalmers Street, City Hall & Hampton Park
When Haidyn's mom reached out about senior portraits in Charleston, she knew exactly what she wanted: quintessential Charleston architecture, beautiful greenery, and plenty of flowers. And with family in Charleston, this city already held a special place in her heart.
Although Haidyn now lives in the Atlanta area, she has grown up visiting Charleston and spending long weekends exploring the historic streets, shopping, and enjoying everything the city has to offer. So when she was in town for a quick fall break, a Charleston senior session felt like the perfect way to document this season of her life.
The only challenge? The weather had other plans.
With passing rain storms moving through Charleston that weekend, we had to stay flexible with our session timing. Thankfully, two of my favorite Charleston locations — the historic downtown streets and Hampton Park — are beautiful in both morning and evening light. We made the switch from an evening session to a morning session, and it ended up working out even better than we could have imagined.
Starting with Family Portraits on Chalmers Street
We met early Sunday morning on Chalmers Street, one of my favorite places for Charleston portraits. The historic architecture, cobblestones, and warm-toned buildings create such a beautiful backdrop, and early Sunday mornings are especially wonderful because the streets are often quiet and wide open.
Since Haidyn wanted her family included in her senior session, we decided to start with portraits of her and her family — including their dog, Cooper!
I always love when seniors choose to incorporate their families or pets into their sessions. Senior portraits are about celebrating the senior, but including the people (and pets!) who are part of their story can make the gallery feel that much more personal.
After finishing the family portion of the session, we continued down Chalmers Street, taking advantage of the variety of historic Charleston backdrops along the way.
Charleston City Hall for a More Formal Look
From Chalmers Street, we made our way toward City Hall on Broad Street.
The white marble stairs at Charleston City Hall are one of my personal favorite spots for senior portraits, especially when a senior brings a dress or outfit with a more formal feel. The clean white marble complements nearly any color or style, and it instantly gives portraits a more elevated, editorial look.
For Haidyn, it was the perfect contrast to the warmer tones and historic textures we had already captured on Chalmers Street.
This is one of the things I love most about creating senior portraits in downtown Charleston: you can walk a relatively short distance and completely change the feel of your images. One location can give you cobblestone streets and historic homes, while just a few blocks away you can create something polished and timeless.
Finishing at Hampton Park
After our downtown Charleston portraits, we headed to Hampton Park — one of my favorite public parks in the Charleston area.
If you've never visited Hampton Park, it is such a beautiful spot for portraits. The park is incredibly well maintained by the local park conservation efforts, and throughout the year you can find seasonal flowers, lush greenery, and gorgeous live oaks throughout the grounds.
It was exactly what Haidyn had envisioned for the second half of her session.
And while we originally planned for an evening session, I'm actually so glad the weather forced us to make the switch to morning. I absolutely love the way the light moves through Hampton Park in the morning.
There is something especially magical about backlighting Spanish moss beneath the live oaks. The soft glow through the trees creates so much depth and movement in an image, and it paired beautifully with Haidyn's short white dress.
And Of Course, More Photos with Cooper!
Since Cooper had been such a trooper throughout the session, there was no way we could let him leave without a few more portraits with Haidyn.
We found a beautiful spot beneath the live oaks and captured some sweet images of the two of them together. These ended up being some of my favorite moments from the session because they felt so natural and personal.
And then, because every senior session needs at least one moment of adventure...
Haidyn literally jumped into the flower beds.
We ended the session with Haidyn surrounded by a beautiful bed of seasonal flowers, creating the colorful, joyful images she had been hoping for when she envisioned her Charleston senior portraits.
A Senior Gallery Full of Charleston
What I love most about Haidyn's session is just how much variety we were able to create in one morning between the family, the cobblestone and classic downtown, to the spanish moss and seasonal flowers.
And all of it still felt cohesive because it told the story of Haidyn's connection to Charleston.
Sometimes the best senior sessions aren't about choosing one perfect location. They're about choosing a few places that each bring something different to the gallery — especially when those places have personal meaning to the senior.
For Haidyn, Charleston wasn't just a pretty backdrop. It was a city she has loved visiting throughout her childhood, a place where she has family, and a city that already felt like part of her story.
I'm so glad we were able to make the most of her short fall-break visit — rain storms and all — and create a gallery that feels completely Charleston, completely Haidyn, and completely her.
