Brooklyn's Charleston Senior Session at Hampton Park and Rainbow Row

When it comes to senior portraits, there’s nothing I love more than helping a senior experience Charleston for the very first time while creating a gallery full of beautiful memories. Brooklyn traveled all the way from Arkansas for her senior portrait session, and together we explored some of Charleston’s most iconic locations, creating a collection of images that perfectly reflected her personality, style, and this exciting season of life.

Brooklyn and her family were staying at the historic The Mills House Hotel and, since they didn’t rent a car during their visit, they planned their session strategically. They caught a rideshare to Hampton Park, where we began our afternoon together, and from there I drove them to some of my favorite portrait locations throughout downtown Charleston before finishing the session back at their hotel.

Having never visited Charleston before, Brooklyn wanted to make the most of her time here. After discovering my work through platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, she chose my two-location senior portrait experience, The Compendium, which is designed for seniors who want a wide variety of backgrounds and the quintessential Charleston experience.

Hampton Park is an amazing locations for senior portraits because it offers so much variety in a single setting. From grand oak trees draped in Spanish moss to seasonal blooms and winding pathways, it provides a soft, natural backdrop that photographs beautifully.

We began the session here to capture a more relaxed, garden-inspired feel before heading into the heart of historic Charleston. The natural colors and textures of the park paired perfectly with Brooklyn’s carefully selected wardrobe choices in a floral long dress and dramatic short white dress.

Exploring Rainbow Row

After Hampton Park, we headed downtown to one of Charleston’s most recognizable landmarks: Rainbow Row.

The pastel homes provided the perfect pop of color and complemented Brooklyn’s wardrobe beautifully. Rainbow Row is often at the top of every Charleston visitor’s must-see list, and it’s easy to understand why. The colorful facades create a cheerful, classic Charleston backdrop that feels both iconic and timeless.

Because Brooklyn chose The Compendium session, we had the flexibility to slow down, explore different angles, and create a wide range of images throughout the area.

A Thoughtfully Planned Wardrobe

One of the things that made Brooklyn’s session so successful was the amount of planning she put into her outfits. Months before her session, she began shopping online, carefully selecting pieces that reflected her personal style while also complementing Charleston’s unique scenery.

She focused on:

  • Color palettes that would stand out yet pair perfectly against Charleston’s colorful architecture and gardens

  • Flattering silhouettes that photographed beautifully

  • Current trends that felt stylish while remaining timeless

  • Variety between outfits to create a diverse gallery

She even rented one of her dresses specifically for the session, adding an elevated and fashion-forward element to her portraits.

The result was planning a session with a wardrobe that transitioned seamlessly between locations and created incredible variety throughout her gallery.

Finishing in the French Quarter

From Rainbow Row, we continued through Charleston’s historic French Quarter, where cobblestone streets, hidden alleys, wrought-iron gates, and historic architecture offered yet another completely different aesthetic.

The French Quarter is one of my favorite areas for senior portraits because every corner feels unique. Within just a few blocks, we can create images that feel elegant, editorial, historic, and modern all at once.

By the end of the session, Brooklyn had experienced many of Charleston’s most beloved locations while building a gallery filled with variety, personality, and beautiful memories from her first visit to the city.

Why Location Variety Matters

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a longer senior portrait session is the opportunity to create a gallery that feels diverse and complete.

During Brooklyn’s session, we moved from:

  • Lush gardens and moss-covered oaks

  • Colorful historic homes

  • Cobblestone streets

  • Architectural details

  • Hidden downtown corners

  • Elegant hotel surroundings

Each location added something unique and something that complimented an outfit ensuring her final gallery would never feel repetitive.

Advice for Future Seniors

If you're currently searching for a senior portrait photographer, my biggest piece of advice is this: choose a photographer whose work you genuinely love.

Look beyond pricing and spend time exploring their portfolio.
Ask yourself:

  • Do you love their editing style?

  • Do their images feel natural and flattering?

  • Do you like the way they pose their clients?

  • Do they understand how to pair wardrobe choices with locations?

  • Can they create variety within a single session?

A photographer’s style, experience, and artistic vision have a huge impact on your final gallery. Choosing solely based on price can often lead to disappointment, while investing in a photographer whose work consistently resonates with you helps ensure you'll love your images for years to come.

Brooklyn’s session is a perfect example of what happens when thoughtful planning, beautiful locations, and a shared creative vision come together. From Hampton Park to Rainbow Row and the French Quarter, her gallery captures not only her senior year but also the memories of experiencing Charleston for the very first time—a keepsake she'll be able to look back on for a lifetime.
