Extended Family Portraits on Isle of Palms

The Guglielmello and Rimerman Families

I wanted to share this session with the Gugliemello and Rimerman Families that all came together on Isle of Palms at sunrise for their beach family portraits. Sunrise may seem daunting for some groups but honestly, this family truly embraced it! A few of them actually beat ME to the beach and I always try to be early! My secret here is that I normally quote larger groups about 10 minutes earlier than our actual  start time on the beach since I know getting multiple families with children up and ready can be a challenge. This gives the families some breathing room if they happen to run into traffic, miss a turn, or have to run back inside for a last minute diaper change (this has definitely happened!). This family was not joking around though, and was waiting for me, 5 minutes ahead of our meeting time- IMPRESSED!

Because we were able to start their session early I actually began with some silhouettes of the individual families. I love these shots as it makes the focus more about the connection and the unique sunrise sky.

We always gather our must-have shots towards the beginning, when the light is soft and the kids are more focused. Depending on how quickly the light is coming, meaning whether it's cloudy or not, I will try to always capture multiple group shots. But we do always have to get the grandchildren with and without the grandparents. Then the adult siblings with and without their parents.

And then of course, my favorite shot when sunrise aligns with great light and some slow moving tides..

Some time with the baby of the family...

I mean who are we kidding, it's always the baby that steals the show!

This summer extended families and groups have been among my most booked, and most favorite sessions! I have had the opportunity to meet so many large families celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and reunions. We have done their portraits out on the beach, at their beach rental home, downtown, and even in their own backyards! These portraits serve as not only a memory, but historical markers and imagery for generations to come. I have truly enjoyed all the families I have met!
